COMMERCIAL ROOFING INC'S STORY

Our owner, David Townsend, has been in the roofing industry for over 27 years. He started as a laborer, learning everything there is to know about the roofing process, best practices, and great customer service. Over time, David worked his way up the ladder at Commercial Roofing USA, and eventually became the company's Vice President. Nothing was handed to David, and he worked countless hours to ensure the service and leadership he provided was what was best for the company.
In 2002, the owner of Commercial Roofing USA was looking to sell the company, and of course, David could not pass up the opportunity to continue being part of this great company. So, he bought it and renamed it to what we know now as: Commercial Roofing Inc. Since then, Commercial Roofing Inc has continued to provide top-notch roofing services for residential and commercial customers alike.

FAQs

  • How much more does metal roof cost than a shingle roof?

A metal roof typically costs (3) three times more than an asphalt shingle roof. The metal roofing materials generally cost 3 times more and the labor and skill that is required to install the roof properly costs more.

  • What is the long-term value of a metal roof verses a shingle roof?

While the initial cost is significantly higher for a metal roof, it often proves more cost effective over the home’s lifespan. An asphalt shingle typically lasts 15-30 years, while metal roofs can last 40-70 years or more. Shingles require more frequent maintenance and repairs. Metal roofs require minimal upkeep. Metal roofs reflect solar heat which can reduce cooling cost in the Hampton Roads warm climate, potentially saving 10 to 40% on energy bills. Ultimately, for homeowners planning to stay in their homes for many years, the long-term savings of a metal roof can offset its higher upfront cost.

  • What is the cost of the average shingle roof, metal roof or flat roof?

The average cost of a shingle roof is $4.00 - $8.00 per square foot, the average cost of a metal roof is $13.00 to $25.00 per square foot, and the average flat roof is $10.00 to $20.00 per square foot. These prices are dependent on the roof complexity. A roof with a steep pitch, multiple dormers, or chimneys will increase labor and material costs for all types, but this is more pronounced for metal roofing due to the need for precise cutting and fitting.

  • How to determine if you have roof damage after a storm.

Missing or Lifted Shingles: Look for bare spots on the roof or shingles lying in your yard. High winds can also lift shingles and break their adhesive seals without completely tearing them off, which looks like curled or uneven edges.

Granule Loss: Check your gutters and downspouts for an accumulation of black, sand-like particles. These are the protective granules from asphalt shingles, and excessive loss indicates damaged shingles that are vulnerable to sun (UV) damage.

Dented Metal Components: Inspect metal features like roof vents, pipe flashing, gutters, and downspouts. Dents, dings, or bent metal are clear signs of hail impact, which likely also affected the shingles.

Debris: Note any fallen branches or debris on the roof or in the yard. Even small branches can cause impact damage or scrapes that compromise the shingle surface.

Damaged Flashing: Look for bent, loose, or missing metal flashing around chimneys, skylights, and vents. Damaged flashing creates a direct path for water intrusion.

Siding/Ground Evidence: Check your siding, fences, or even your outdoor AC unit for dents or chips. If these items show hail damage, your roof almost certainly does too.

  • How to pick the best roofer in the Hampton Roads and Tidewater Area.

Virginia Contractor License: Ensure the contractor holds an active Virginia Class A license.  A simple business license is not sufficient; a contractor's license indicates they have met state requirements. You can verify this through the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) website.

Insurance: The roofer must carry both General Liability and Workers' Compensation insurance.

Bonding: While not always mandatory, a contractor's bond offers an extra layer of protection, ensuring the job gets completed even if the company goes out of business

  • What is the best roofing material for the Hampton Roads Virginia area?

The best roofing material for the Hampton Roads, Virginia area is a balance between extreme weather resistance (hurricanes, high winds, heavy rain) and the high humidity/saltwater exposure of a coastal climate. Metal roofing and high-quality architectural asphalt shingles are generally considered the top choices.
